<text><p>The Floating Museum has no walls. It is an invisible system designed to exhibit works of art that do not fit into the traditional boundaries of museum and gallery situations. The Floating Museum facilitates and encourages artists whose work takes place directly in he environment. A fundamental concept of The Floating Museum is to recycle existing spaces and resources as well as to transform local areas into temporary exhibition sites. (Hershman 1977) The public art statement Lynn Hershman designed, The Floating Museum, was structured to be integrated into everyday life. It enabled artists to present works of art that they could not fit within he traditional boundaries of museum and gallery situations. The Floating Museum invited an artists and made the necessary arrangements for the presentation of the artist&rsquo;s piece. Most of the works related to the environment or inter-media presentations. The projects developed in three phases in the three years of The Floating Museum&rsquo;s operation (1975-1978).</p>
<p>The first year and a half, from the fall of 1975, twelve individual projects were commissioned. Over half were by Bay Area artists, and the others were by artists who came to present the work in the San Francisco area [&hellip;] The program was inaugurated on November 6 1975, with two performance pieces by Eleanor Antin, a Southern California artist, who chose to present &ldquo;King&rsquo;s Meditation&rdquo; at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco and the following day the &ldquo;Ballerina&rdquo; in the eighteenth-century French galleries at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor [&hellip;] The second phase of The Floating Museum&rsquo;s programming was called &ldquo;Global Space Invasion: Phase I&rdquo; and introduced into the Museum&rsquo;s activity collaboration and extension beyond the Bay Area. In May 1977 nine artists went to Europe to create work together or individually in various cities. The following year, in July 1978, new work by these same artists, reflecting their European experience, was shown in &ldquo;Global Space Invasion: Phase II&rdquo; at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the final event in The floating Museum&rsquo;s life. <text>It begins with my friends Nancy Buchanan, Nancy Angelo and Karen Neubert coming in with me from the rear of the space and passing out the scripts flirtatiously to the men and ignoring the women seated there. Each of the 150 scripts had a different image of myself Xeroxed on the cover, but the same story within. On tape, I ask the audience to go with me into a neutral time-space where simultaneity is the rule and out of which we can emerge the same – but different. Then I read on tape the entire script they have been handed while I go to the centre of the space with my arms full of large scrolls. The women exit. I “stake out a territory “ by taping huge photographic images of my face, my hands in my lap and my full seated figure on the walls around me. They are big and unwieldy and I get more and more anxious. As time goes by I begin impatiently to remove my clothes bit by but until I am in a slip. Earlier my three friends had emerged in white slips and covered with white gauzey veils. They act as invisible psychic presences, silently helpful, being ignored, being ordered about in my rush to complete my task. I feel my hysteria and try to help. I add large strips of paper torn from a roll on which I scrawl even more events and information from the experience of these intervening days. The women try to slow me down, to comfort me. At last I can do no more and frantic with despair and grief I stand in their midst and fall wailing to the ground. While two of them bind me in their veils like a cocoon, a third calls upon the names of women artists, an invocation to protect me (sic) sense of territory, both physical and psychic, while I am withdrawn. Their names are written around the floor between me and the audience. My friends rock me in their arms like a baby until I relax. Then they rise up to disengage a circle of rainbow-coloured filmy sashes hung above us and lit from the centre. Pulling these down one by one they begin to decorate me and each other with garlands until there are no more left and we leave the room the same – but different. The tape goes on for the next 3-4 minutes, ending with “What would you say if I was no longer afraid?” (Smith 1978: 13)

<text>The first work that honored his identification of the ordinary as an idea for art was the repair of the sidewalk outside 500 Capp Street in 1976. His preparation of the site, mixing and pouring of concrete, and subsequent restoration of the sidewalk were recorded on video by the artist Tom Marioni in order to document an event that would disappear underfoot. The work came about as a result of Ireland’s annoyance when, as a new homeowner, he was called upon by the city to repair the sidewalk at his own expense. Ireland’s profound sense of irritation at having this responsibility impinge on his studio time goaded him into questioning whether there was any difference between an artist’s and someone else’s repair of the sidewalk. The attitude brought to the activity, he concluded, determined whether it was art or not. (Gross 2003: 155)

<text>The piece took place in Eleanor Coppola’s home. Two museums wanted us to do something in her house and we just decided that instead of giving the a tour we would turn the entire house into a game board. So we used the floor plan as a kind of Monopoly, drove people into the rooms in order to find something though at the end there was no real prize. We were in one room and we projected the game’s instructions to the groups who were in the living room. We engaged a union of prostitutes to be in the rooms doing various things, like interacting with the patrons, so you did not know who was real and who was not, who was a prostitute and who was not. This created a blur over the whole population who came that evening. (Hershman Leeson in Giannachi and Kaye 2011: 38)
