Again, as in Richmond, the artist sent instructions for the curator to perform the work. I was announcing all the artists performances as they occurred, and I announced I would be performing Allan Fish&rsquo;s piece for him. I climbed to the top of a stepladder and, with my back to the audience, peed into a big galvanized tub. As the water level went up, the sound level went down. It demonstrated a principle of physics. Since my back was to the audience, it was clear that this was not about exposing myself. It was funny and shocking, but mostly funny. The audience was laughing and applauding. I was famous in San Francisco for my <em>Piss Piece</em> for about twenty years, but it&rsquo;s faded from memory now. Someone told me that Francis Coppola said he could never fill a bucket with water without thinking of my <em>Piss Piece</em>. (Marioni 2003: 95-6)</text>

<text>In 1969 I had to have a way of exhibiting because I felt like exhibiting. It was too politically complicated to try to exhibit my work and be a curator at the same time for a combination of reasons which are probably obvious. So I had to exhibit under another name. I created a fictitious character, Allan Fish. And when it was no longer necessary to be concerned about those things, then I announced, by way of a transformation piece, that I was Allan Fish. <em>The Act of Drinking Beer With Friends is the Highest Form of Art</em> was the first Allan Fish one-man show. It took place at the Oakland Museum. I invited 21 of my friends to come and drink beer at the museum. And 16 people were there. All of the people were sculptors except for Werner Jepson, the music composer. We got drunk in the museum together and the debris that was left over was exhibited as documentation of that activity &ndash; empty beer cans and cigarette butts, just morning after kind of debris. It was to exaggerate the concept of the act being the art and the documentation being just a record of the real activity. (Marioni in Vergine 2000: 143)</text>

And when it was no longer necessary to be concerned about those things, then I announced, by way of a transformation piece, that I was Allan Fish [&hellip;] Last Summer I did a piece called <em>Allan Fish Drinks a Case of Beer</em>, which has to do with creating a situation, an environment, while becoming increasingly more intoxicated over about an eight hour period. The Reese Palley Gallery bought a case of Becks beer for me. I put it in the refrigerator, and had the refrigerator in the gallery. I had all the things in the gallery that I needed to be comfortable. I had a TV set, my easy chair, a tape recorder, a refrigerator, and a can opener hanging down on a string from the ceiling. To separate myself from people that came into the gallery. I ran thread at about 30-degree angle across the room. The thread was white for the first foot, and then it was black across the room, and then it was white for the last foot against the wall. It looked like thin black lines floating, the kind of lines you see on your TV screens when you get disturbance. I tried to create an image with lines across it that would serve as a barrier. The lines also served as a screen, a projection of everything that was in the room, tending to make it all two-dimensional, as in a painting. I also had my conga drum there. I played my conga drum while the tape recorder, the radio, and the television set and the phonograph records were all playing simultaneously. I had a barrage of noise. Later in the day, as I was very drunk, those were the kinds of sounds I needed to keep me going. At a point when I was very drunk, I drew lines on the right side of my face and the left side of my face that suggested the contours of my own face moving around the left side of my face, so that it appeared, as in Futurist paintings, that I was moving fast when I couldn&rsquo;t move fast. To compensate, I drew these lines to make it look like I was moving faster than I was. (Marioni in Vergine 2000: 143-4).</text>

<p>Linda Montano came to me with the idea that she and I would be handcuffed together for three days. It was her work, and I was a participant in the piece. At the opening we showed a video that was half an hour long. Videotapes were reel to reel in those days and thirty minutes long. I had a video recorder that was like a big trunk, and sometime during each day or evening I would turn the camera on and record ten minutes straight without stopping. One day we ate dinner during a ten-minute segment. In another segment we walked around. We were doing normal things that anyone would do, but we could only show things we did in MOCA because the video recorder was so heavy. The video was just to get a record of some of our activities. It wasn&rsquo;t the point of the piece. While we were handcuffed, we rode on the bus, went out to eat, went to the movies, went to the hardware store, in other words had a life.&nbsp;(Marioni 2003: 106)&nbsp;</p></text>

<p>Tom Marioni loosely organized a group of people who met in a place called Breen&rsquo;s Bar on Third between Mission and Market. It was an old bar used by the <em>San Francisco Chronicle</em> writers. It became a kind of unofficial meeting place, a place where people, mainly artists, would go and gather and talk. Maybe just fool around. But a place where we could meet. There actually were a number of shows done in that bar; we did a sculpture-sound show organized by Tom Marioni that ended up on KPFA radio in Berkeley. And slowly a lot of energy began to develop around him. (Woodall in Shank 1989: 269)</p>

The video tape was an element in the piece and means nothing by itself. it was destroyed… (Marioni 1971: 2)

<text>In 1973 at the University Art Museum Berkeley I made a demonstration about intention. I called it “lecture/demonstration” because I meant it to be instructional. I outlined a square area with masking tape on the floor of the museum’s central open space. People watched from above. I had my band at that time, the MOCA Ensemble, and for the first part of the piece they played bebop jazz. While they played, the janitor of the museum, the real janitor, swept the floor with sweeping compound. He did the job of getting the floor clean.

Next, a dancer swept the floor with the same broom while the band played a jazz waltz. She put feathers on the floor first, and children ran through them while she was sweeping. She was interested in the grace of the body moving through the space.

After she finished, an actor swept the floor, using the same broom. The band played movie soundtrack music. He swept the floor with a flourish, playing to the audience, always facing the audience, like he would on a stage. He was concerned with convincing the audience that he was a janitor. It didn’t matter to him whether he got the floor clean. He was less concerned about the grace of his body than about playing the role and being convincing.

I was the last one to sweep the floor. The music was free jazz. I used sand, a sculptural material, and gave the floor an even coating. As I swept, I made patterns, manipulating the material. That was my concern, moving the material.

When the janitor swept the floor, it was real life. When the dancer swept the floor, it was dance. When the actor swept the floor, it was theatre. And when I swept the floor, it was sculpture, a sculpture action. The same activity was different, depending on the intent of the person doing it. (Marioni 2003: 138)

<text><p>I made my first drum brush drawings in 1972 and I continue to make these drawings, which are inspired by the automatic writing of the surrealist movement. The drawings are the result of rubbing and beating with steel wire drum brushes ( like jazz drummers use) against a large sheet of sandpaper. The steel is transferred to the paper over a long period of time and the brushing on the sandpaper makes a rasping sound. The action is repetitive like that of a knife against a sharpening stone. The left hand makes a single arc, up and down, while the right hand moves in a circle-like motion in the shape of a violin or an artist&rsquo;s palette. Over the years the drawings have changed only slightly, like handwriting changes as personality evolves. This becomes a kind of talk drumming, played on a hollow core drawing board. The result is a pictorial record of the sound activity, a marriage of art and music.
