<text>In 1975 I did a show called “Second Generation” with artists who had been students of the artists of my generation. One of the artists [Daryl Sapien] painted a large section of the back wall, ceiling, and floor white to set up a space for his performance. After the show I could see that this white section interfered with the character of the space, which had been a printing company for fifty years before I moved in. Being concerned with traditional museum functions like preservation, collection, and restoration, I thought of the space as a relic of the mechanical age.

I got the idea to restore the back wall area of MOCA when I read about the restoration of The Night Watch, a painting by Rembrandt that had been slashed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. They built a special room in the museum with windows around it so the public could watch the restoration like sidewalk spectators.

Up until that time, 1976, there had never been a painting show in MOCA. I asked a painter friend of mine, David Ireland, if he wanted to collaborate with me to fix the space. Working every day for a month, he scraped the white paint off the floor and rubbed it with printer’s ink to stain in back to the original colour. He worked from photographs to match the colours and restore painted shapes that had been on the wall when the printing company had painted around equipment. He replaced the moldings that had been cut away. Each day I would videotape the progress, a kind of time-lapse photography. We were making a Photorealist painting, and when the work was done there was a completely invisible artwork. (Marioni 2003: 113-14)</text>

                <text>In 1973 at the University Art Museum Berkeley I made a demonstration about intention. I called it “lecture/demonstration” because I meant it to be instructional. I outlined a square area with masking tape on the floor of the museum’s central open space. People watched from above. I had my band at that time, the MOCA Ensemble, and for the first part of the piece they played bebop jazz. While they played, the janitor of the museum, the real janitor, swept the floor with sweeping compound. He did the job of getting the floor clean.

Next, a dancer swept the floor with the same broom while the band played a jazz waltz. She put feathers on the floor first, and children ran through them while she was sweeping. She was interested in the grace of the body moving through the space.

After she finished, an actor swept the floor, using the same broom. The band played movie soundtrack music. He swept the floor with a flourish, playing to the audience, always facing the audience, like he would on a stage. He was concerned with convincing the audience that he was a janitor. It didn’t matter to him whether he got the floor clean. He was less concerned about the grace of his body than about playing the role and being convincing.

I was the last one to sweep the floor. The music was free jazz. I used sand, a sculptural material, and gave the floor an even coating. As I swept, I made patterns, manipulating the material. That was my concern, moving the material.

When the janitor swept the floor, it was real life. When the dancer swept the floor, it was dance. When the actor swept the floor, it was theatre. And when I swept the floor, it was sculpture, a sculpture action. The same activity was different, depending on the intent of the person doing it. (Marioni 2003: 138)

                <text>
I made my first drum brush drawings in 1972 and I continue to make these drawings, which are inspired by the automatic writing of the surrealist movement. The drawings are the result of rubbing and beating with steel wire drum brushes ( like jazz drummers use) against a large sheet of sandpaper. The steel is transferred to the paper over a long period of time and the brushing on the sandpaper makes a rasping sound. The action is repetitive like that of a knife against a sharpening stone. The left hand makes a single arc, up and down, while the right hand moves in a circle-like motion in the shape of a violin or an artist’s palette. Over the years the drawings have changed only slightly, like handwriting changes as personality evolves. This becomes a kind of talk drumming, played on a hollow core drawing board. The result is a pictorial record of the sound activity, a marriage of art and music. During a drawing/drumming session, because of the repetition of sound and action a trance state can occur and I can see elements of fantasy in the marks. To most people the results look like birds flying to the left. (Marioni 1997: 24)
</text>

Tom Marioni loosely organized a group of people who met in a place called Breen’s Bar on Third between Mission and Market. It was an old bar used by the San Francisco Chronicle writers. It became a kind of unofficial meeting place, a place where people, mainly artists, would go and gather and talk. Maybe just fool around. But a place where we could meet. There actually were a number of shows done in that bar; we did a sculpture-sound show organized by Tom Marioni that ended up on KPFA radio in Berkeley. And slowly a lot of energy began to develop around him. (Woodall in Shank 1989: 269)

                <text>
</text>

                <text>In Studio Marioni draws his life-sized shadow which is distorted by a piece of black velvet suspended between two yellow spotlights and the vertical drawing surface. In a recent conversation Marioni explained that he chose yellow light because it is linked with the intellect in alchemical theory and would, therefore, facilitate the telepathic communication he hopes to achieve with his audience. Musical sound, alternating between jazz and classical, accompanies the action as much as it would in his own studio. It is significant to note that Marioni has maintained a life-long association with jazz and percussion which is manifested in both his drum brush drawings as well as in the action/drawing Studio. (Lewallen 1980: 3)

It is a tableau whose props suggest Marioni’s place of work. Bathed in yellow – traditionally a colour symbolizing enlightenment and the intellect – the space is filled with the artist’s presence. A large sheet of paper is affixed to the rear wall, upon which Marioni casts an attenuated shadow. Behind the paper are two contact microphones that pick up the sound of the artist’s pencil rhythmically filling in the shadow […] As Marioni relaxes, the pencil stroke is determined by the rhythm of his body […] It is […] interrupted as Marioni opens and pours a bottle of beer and later moves from the shadow to a parallelogram of light – the reflection of a tilted mirror. At that point one perceives the overriding plan, for Marioni is setting down a record of the artist at work: the shadow exerts its presence by filling and transforming its opposite, the “empty” circle of light. (Marioni 1997: 23)

The video tape was an element in the piece and means nothing by itself. it was destroyed… (Marioni 1971: 2)

                <text>My alter ego Allan Fish was one of the nine artists in the show [Sound Art]. Again, as in Richmond, the artist sent instructions for the curator to perform the work. I was announcing all the artists performances as they occurred, and I announced I would be performing Allan Fish’s piece for him. I climbed to the top of a stepladder and, with my back to the audience, peed into a big galvanized tub. As the water level went up, the sound level went down. It demonstrated a principle of physics. Since my back was to the audience, it was clear that this was not about exposing myself. It was funny and shocking, but mostly funny. The audience was laughing and applauding. I was famous in San Francisco for my Piss Piece for about twenty years, but it’s faded from memory now. Someone told me that Francis Coppola said he could never fill a bucket with water without thinking of my Piss Piece. (Marioni 2003: 95-6)</text>
