Title A name given to the resource Saloon of MOCA Description An account of the resource For a couple of years in 1973 and 1974 every Wednesday afternoon there was free beer in MOCA while artists’ video tapes were shown. In ’76 I decided to meet people downstairs in Breen’s Café, and I sent out cards announcing Café Society “twotofour” every Wednesday in the Saloon of MOCA. I got the name from Bob Feldman, a New York publisher. I had just done a one page photo-work for San Francisco Magazine that said, “There is meaning in life only only if you devote yourself to society,” and when Feldman saw it he said, “café society.” I went down to Breen’s every Wednesday, sat there, and drank a beer. In the afternoon Breen’s wasn’t busy, and we took over the booths in the front of the bar. Later, the booths were reserved for us. Over the years, the meeting time had gotten later. Now, it’s in my studio and is from five to eight. My Café Society became a kind of open house for artists, an artists’ bar, really. In New York, a lot of artists were living in the same neighborhood, SoHo, which had bars where they hung out. But the only way to get an artists’ scene going in San Francisco was to do it in an artificial way, by formalizing it, by inviting people. Title A name given to the resource Exhibition: Opening of The Museum of Conceptual Art at 75 3rd Street Description An account of the resource On Wednesday, January 3, 1973, the Museum of Conceptual Art opened its doors across the street from its previous space in San Francisco. The new address (75 Third Street) is above the Breen’s Bar where many previous showings by MOCA have occurred. In this dingy loft, previously used by a printing company, about 500 artists and viewers gathered between 7pm and 11pm expecting to witness a startling new show by the museum’s curator Tom Marioni. Instead, they were left staring at each other and less than adequate quantity of bottled Fisher beer. By the time I arrived at 9 pm, the two turkeys and other delicacies placed near the entrance were nothing more than grisly carcass's and empty plates. Title A name given to the resource Exhibition: Second Generation Description An account of the resource This night of performances was a celebration of MOCA’s fifth anniversary and, according to Marioni, the last group exhibition at MOCA. (Foley 1980: 160) In a wedge-shaped space with large rectangular grids painted on opposing walls, Sapien and Mike Hinton worked at recreating a relatively simple drawing by following instructions delivered via headphone from Cyd Gibson. Sapien and Hllton were on MOCA’s second floor. Gibson on the third floor. The drawing was presented to Gibson in grid sections on slides projected on the wall in front of her. Television monitors fed by cameras fixed to helmets worn by Sapien and Hilton showed Gibson what was going on downstairs and also provided the only means of seeing available to Sapien and Hinton. Off in a dark corner Craig Schiller mixed feeds from all the various cameras and monitors into a dense video sandwich. Title A name given to the resource Exhibition: Chinese Youth Alternative Description An account of the resource All day exhibition of a floor in the same building as MOCA, which was vandalized by a Chinese youth group. When the group was evicted, Marioni opened the space for exhibition. (Foley 1980: 158) In 1974 the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency, my landlord, gave the floor above my museum to another nonprofit organization, the Chinese Youth Alternative. In Chinatown there were two main gangs at the time. One was for American born Chinese, and the other, the Wa Ching, was for Hong Kong born. The Wa Ching were my new neighbours. After six months of gang warfare in the building these juvenile delinquents were evicted and I got back the third floor, which I had bee using before this group moved in. The walls were full of holes and covered wit English and Chinese graffiti. There was broken furniture everywhere. It looked like the place had been bombed. I sent out an announcement, with a picture, inviting people to a one day viewing of an environmental exhibition by the Chinese Youth Alternative. This was an invisible work of mine. I claimed the space and presented it as a work of art. It was a ready-made installation, a piece of real life that became art in the context of an art museum. Title A name given to the resource Exhibition: South of the Slot Description An account of the resource South of the Slot was a group show that took place in San Francisco during the months of October and November in 1974. It was a show that was organized by a group of artists as a much needed forum for a particular kind of work. Organised around a loose structure, the artists that participated were asked to choose a date and time at which they would present their work. The space at 63 Bluxome Street in San Francisco was made available to them through the two month period with no stated restrictions as to how the space was to be used. The work that was presented differed widely with each individual, but in general relied on real time presentation for transferring information from artist to audience. The directness of this kind of transference sets up a field of variables very different from traditional forms of art. Each artist dealt with these variables by finding a mode which best suited the ideas inherent in the design of the presented situation. The twenty two presentations included such various modes as: video performance and live performance, projections and photo-documentation, dance and music, tableau and environmental situation. Title A name given to the resource Exhibition: All Night Sculpture Description An account of the resource In ’73 there was a show at MOCA called All Night Sculptures, probably the most interesting show that happened there. It was very serious. Nine artists designed work for all night viewing: installations that had something to do with nighttime or performances that went on for twelve hours from sunset to sunrise. People could come at any time during he night to see the show. Every artist had his or her own room. Mel Henderson built his room into a corner that had a window on one side. There was no door, just a slit to look into. The room was lined with aluminum foil, and outside, visible through the window, were six searchlights aimed at the building next door, which was a parking garage. He lit that building just so you would see it through the little slit.That was really an interesting way to make a space that was about the night. There was a room in MOCA that had been a ladies’ lounge when the space had been a printing company before I moved in. It was a little room where the women employees would rest or smoke or put on makeup. Barbara Smith chose that room and set it up for her performance. She put a mattress on the floor with a sheet on it. Next to it was a table with incense and oils and fruit and flowers. Barbara was naked on the bed, and a tape recorder kept playing the same thing: “Feed me, feed me, feed me,” over and over again. All night, there was a line outside the door, mostly men. A bare light bulb was hanging outside the door. It felt like a street corner. People went in one at a time to have a private session with Barbara. They had a glass of wine or a piece of fruit with her, or had a conversation, or gave her a massage, or had sex. She took some flack from feminists later. They thought she was selling out. She didn’t interpret it in that way at all. She said it was about how men relate to women. Terry Fox built a work in the skylight. You climbed up a ladder and into a little space where you were on your hands and knees under a board. After you crawled out from under the board, you realized that it had a sheet on it and was the size of a bed. The moon shining through the skylight was the only light. There was a metal bowl with a big sponge in it that had been soaked in vinegar. Terry called this piece Memento Mori. Since I was director of MOCA, I could be in the shows only if I was invisible. In this exhibition, my work was presented by another person using his own name. At the time, most people thought it was his art. Frank Youmans was a moldmaker I had met while working in a plaster shop in the ‘60s. I asked him to make a plaster mold of a femake model and then cast it in plaster. It took him all night to do this, and the room he worked in took on the look of a traditional artist’s studio. Title A name given to the resource Exhibition: The Return of Abstract Expressionism Description An account of the resource When Jackson Pollock and Morris Louis let the paint leave their hands, gravity formed the shape of the stain on the raw canvas. This exhibition of abstract expressionism is a direct extension of the painting of the ‘50s; the action is the same only the dimensions are different. The gesture is the same and the procedure similar if more athletic. The artists exhibit the same love of organic and natural forces, they place a familiar emphasis on the role of accident and chance. The renewed interest in natural forces and raw materials exists for several reasons. There is, certainly, a tremendous dissatisfaction with the destructive forces of modern culture: war, pollution, and the generally widespread ignorance of nature. Another influence is the popularity of drug use, and the religious importance that it places on an awareness of our environment and also upon the reality of natural processes and environment. But perhaps more important, the artists are not interested in producing objects. The majority of the pieces exist only for the duration of the show. There are no photographs in the catalogue because some work cannot be seen before installation. In fact, several artists have sent only instructions for the creation of their works. It would harm the intent of the work to frame or reduce them to the degree needed for reproduction and, the nature of the work precludes reproduction. For the first time, the artist is freeing himself from the object. As a result the historian is now faced with the responsibility of recording the work. The artist is involved with the direct manipulation of materials that posses qualities of spontaneity and improvisation, and that normally produces dispensable work. The Fire Department declared it a hazard and broke it up to melt it faster. (Anonymous 1971: 6) Picture this: over a two-hour span on a hot afternoon in July, a “glacier” forms at the entrance to the Richmond Art Center. Three and a half tons of ice, in three-hundred-pound blocks, are stacked five feet high by five feet deep by five feet wide, and make a thick, frozen wall, sealing off the doors leading go Paul Kos’s first major exhibition. Richmond Glacier seems like a force of nature: massive, unavoidable, and dazzling. Its wet, glass-like surface is so seductive that it exerts an almost magnetic attraction. It is large enough that the nearby air is chilled. Standing beside it with nowhere to go, even time appears to slow down. It demands contemplation. Face to face with a barrier of ice, the viewer is stopped cold and challenged to make the next move: move It. Or move around it. It is a Sphinx that asks a single question: “What are you waiting for?” Strategy is now as important as meaning or aesthetics. The usual way in is out of the question. Kos has tantalized the viewer, and frustrated expectations. “Access” to the exhibition (to the “Art”) is denied: the door becomes a wall. Normal “art-going” habits don’t work here. Site is at the heart of the matter. Located precisely in the gallery’s doorway, Richmond Glacier seems to be a simple barrier. But it is really a kind of threshold. Threshold is its central metaphor, and everything, from its conceptual grace to the use of ice as a material, flows from it. Ice itself is a threshold material, existing – precariously – along a razor’s edge of form and decay.On a hot summer’s day, it has already lost the battle.
