A fundamental concept of The Floating Museum is to recycle existing spaces and resources as well as to transform local areas into temporary exhibition sites. The projects developed in three phases in the three years of The Floating Museum’s operation (1975-1978). The first year and a half, from the fall of 1975, twelve individual projects were commissioned. Over half were by Bay Area artists, and the others were by artists who came to present the work in the San Francisco area […] The program was inaugurated on November 6 1975, with two performance pieces by Eleanor Antin, a Southern California artist, who chose to present “King’s Meditation” at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco and the following day the “Ballerina” in the eighteenth-century French galleries at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor […] The second phase of The Floating Museum’s programming was called “Global Space Invasion: Phase I” and introduced into the Museum’s activity collaboration and extension beyond the Bay Area. Title A name given to the resource Exhibition: South of the Slot Description An account of the resource South of the Slot was a group show that took place in San Francisco during the months of October and November in 1974. It was a show that was organized by a group of artists as a much needed forum for a particular kind of work. Organised around a loose structure, the artists that participated were asked to choose a date and time at which they would present their work. The space at 63 Bluxome Street in San Francisco was made available to them through the two month period with no stated restrictions as to how the space was to be used. The work that was presented differed widely with each individual, but in general relied on real time presentation for transferring information from artist to audience. The directness of this kind of transference sets up a field of variables very different from traditional forms of art. Each artist dealt with these variables by finding a mode which best suited the ideas inherent in the design of the presented situation. The twenty two presentations included such various modes as: video performance and live performance, projections and photo-documentation, dance and music, tableau and environmental situation. Title A name given to the resource Exhibition: All Night Sculpture Description An account of the resource In ’73 there was a show at MOCA called All Night Sculptures, probably the most interesting show that happened there. It was very serious. Nine artists designed work for all night viewing: installations that had something to do with nighttime or performances that went on for twelve hours from sunset to sunrise. People could come at any time during he night to see the show. Every artist had his or her own room. Mel Henderson built his room into a corner that had a window on one side. There was no door, just a slit to look into. The room was lined with aluminum foil, and outside, visible through the window, were six searchlights aimed at the building next door, which was a parking garage. He lit that building just so you would see it through the little slit.That was really an interesting way to make a space that was about the night. There was a room in MOCA that had been a ladies’ lounge when the space had been a printing company before I moved in. It was a little room where the women employees would rest or smoke or put on makeup. Barbara Smith chose that room and set it up for her performance. She put a mattress on the floor with a sheet on it. Next to it was a table with incense and oils and fruit and flowers. Barbara was naked on the bed, and a tape recorder kept playing the same thing: “Feed me, feed me, feed me,” over and over again. All night, there was a line outside the door, mostly men. A bare light bulb was hanging outside the door. It felt like a street corner. People went in one at a time to have a private session with Barbara. They had a glass of wine or a piece of fruit with her, or had a conversation, or gave her a massage, or had sex. She took some flack from feminists later. They thought she was selling out. She didn’t interpret it in that way at all. She said it was about how men relate to women. Terry Fox built a work in the skylight. You climbed up a ladder and into a little space where you were on your hands and knees under a board. After you crawled out from under the board, you realized that it had a sheet on it and was the size of a bed. The moon shining through the skylight was the only light. There was a metal bowl with a big sponge in it that had been soaked in vinegar. Terry called this piece Memento Mori. Since I was director of MOCA, I could be in the shows only if I was invisible. In this exhibition, my work was presented by another person using his own name. At the time, most people thought it was his art. Frank Youmans was a moldmaker I had met while working in a plaster shop in the ‘60s. I asked him to make a plaster mold of a femake model and then cast it in plaster. It took him all night to do this, and the room he worked in took on the look of a traditional artist’s studio. Title A name given to the resource Exhibition: The Eighties Description An account of the resource In response to this new zeitgeist, Berkeley Art Museum curators Brenda Richardson and Susan Rannells presented The Eighties in 1970, soon after the museum moved into its new building. Richardson and Rannells asked a group of artists to address in their works what the world would be like in the 1980s. They came up with an array of oddities, including Wayne E. Campbell's latex room titled Table the Problem; James Melchert's wishing well consisting of a sheet of Plexiglas covered with water drops and money suspended over the heads of viewers; and, emanating from a wooden box, William Wiley's faint, tape-recorded voice repeating over and over, "This is the eighties, this is the eighties." Much of the art in the show looked as if it was still in progress, and some of it was. The artists agreed to spend time in the galleries, working, talking to visitors, and encouraging them to present their own ideas, artwork, poetry, or music in a designated "free space" marked by a neon sign. Depending on the day, one might see typewritten statements about the future tacked onto the wall, or latex sculptures representing deformed bodies, or a tombstone with images of flowers and the words "Rest Assured" etched into it. As one of the artists commented, "You kind of get the public to come in every day to see what's happening, instead of to come to see what has happened . . . that's what we need for the eighties."[1] The decision to blur the distinction between gallery and studio, spectator and artist (observer and participant), art and life came out of several long and freewheeling conversations among the artists[2] and foreshadowed an attitude that would become de rigueur as the decade progressed. The most infamous piece in the show was Terry Fox's Defoliation, performed on opening night. Title A name given to the resource Exhibition: The Return of Abstract Expressionism Description An account of the resource When Jackson Pollock and Morris Louis let the paint leave their hands, gravity formed the shape of the stain on the raw canvas. This exhibition of abstract expressionism is a direct extension of the painting of the ‘50s; the action is the same only the dimensions are different. The gesture is the same and the procedure similar if more athletic. The artists exhibit the same love of organic and natural forces, they place a familiar emphasis on the role of accident and chance. The renewed interest in natural forces and raw materials exists for several reasons. There is, certainly, a tremendous dissatisfaction with the destructive forces of modern culture: war, pollution, and the generally widespread ignorance of nature. Another influence is the popularity of drug use, and the religious importance that it places on an awareness of our environment and also upon the reality of natural processes and environment. But perhaps more important, the artists are not interested in producing objects. The majority of the pieces exist only for the duration of the show. There are no photographs in the catalogue because some work cannot be seen before installation. In fact, several artists have sent only instructions for the creation of their works. It would harm the intent of the work to frame or reduce them to the degree needed for reproduction and, the nature of the work precludes reproduction. For the first time, the artist is freeing himself from the object. As a result the historian is now faced with the responsibility of recording the work. The artist is involved with the direct manipulation of materials that posses qualities of spontaneity and improvisation, and that normally produces dispensable work. It is the act of creation which is art. Title A name given to the resource Exhibition: Sound Sculpture As Description An account of the resource I invited nine sculptors to make sound works for my show, which took place on April 10, 1970. Each artist produced sounds by manipulating a material. Terry Fox hit a bowl of water against against the floor and made a sound like bong. Paul Kos trained eight boom microphones at two twenty-five pound blocks of ice. People listened, trying to hear the inauaible sound of the ice. Mel Henderson fired a thirty-calibre rifle in the room, which had about a hundred people in it. Jim Melchert, who was out of town, gave instructions to one of his students, Jim Pomeroy, to perform his work. Pomeroy went to Breen’s Bar and telephoned my space. He had been instructed to let the phone ring fifteen times, then hang up, then put another nickel in and do it again for fifteen rings. The room was filled with people listening to the telephone ring thirty times. That was a good piece. My alter ego, Allan Fish was one of the nine artists in the show […] I announced I would be performing Allan Fish’s piece for him. I climbed to the top of a stepladder and, with my back to the audience, peed into a big galvanized tub. (Marioni 2003: 95-6) Peter McCann laid plastic wrapping material on the floor which popped when arriving visitors walked over it. Me Henderson paced up and down the large loft with a 30-caliber rifle. He took aim and fired a single shot at a film of a tiger being projected on a paper covered saw horse. Just then the telephone rang fifteen times, twice in succession; Jim Melchert had dialed the museum from Breen’s, a famous bar across the street. Alan Fish’s piece was performed by Tom Marioni. Perched atop an eight foot ladder, he pissed into a galvanized washtub. As the tub filled the sound dropped in pitch. He was followed by Terry Fox, who scraped a shovel across the linoleum floor and vibrated a thin plexiglass sheet very fast. Jim McReady paraded four girls wearing shiny nylons down a 3’ by 9’ long rug. As they rubbed their thighs together a swishing sound was heard. Paul Kos, who is known for outdoor works using ice and salt rocks, collaborated wit Richard Beggs, an electronic musician, on a piece in which eleven boom-microphones tried to pick upo the sound of two 25lb blocks of melting ice. For the finale, Arlo Acton distributed several hundred metal crickets and the loft began to ring with chirping sounds. Then he released a polished metal ball hung from the ceiling which smashed into a heavy glass plate. Terry Fox Description An account of the resource AV: What would you see as your earliest body work? TF: The Push Wall piece. It was like having a dialogue with the wall, exchanging energy with it. I pushed as hard as I could for about eight or nine minutes, until I was too tired to push anymore. I used to park my car every day in that alley and I always looked at those walls but never touched them. Then one day I touched one of the walls, felt its solidity, its belly. I realized we were both the same but we had had no dialogue, in a sense. We normally just walk by these things, not feeling connected to them. AV: You could say that lot of new art is about looking at aspects of reality and realizing the unexpected energy they possess. TF: Oh, sure. For me, in a performance, all the elements have exactly the same weight, including myself. Exactly. And dialogues can take place between them, psychically and physically. When I was pushing the wall, I felt it was somehow alive like a person.
