<text>
The San Francisco Art Institute had an annual exhibition every year that was important to the community because artists curated it. It was called the Art Institute Annual, and it was usually a month-long exhibition. In 1976 it was literally an annual. I organized it that year and I invited six other artists to act as curators. We took turns inviting artists, and each invited artist put up a show for a week in a rented storefront space on Sixteenth Street. (Marioni 2003: 123)

The 1975-76 Art Institute Annual took place in a politically and visually neutral space: a rented storefront in the industrial part of San Francisco (16th and Folsom). The exhibition was conceived as a year long show, each artist in the show using the space for one week. Every Friday night was set aside as the opening for a show – usually the shows were only open Friday nights. The key to the space was passed from artist to artist. The exhibiting artists were chosen by the Annual Committee (curators) made up of Tom Marioni, Barney Bailey, Terry Fox, Howard Fried, Paul Kos, Stephen Laub and Bonnie Sherk. Every week one of us invited an artist to use the space to make and exhibition. Each artist received a $25 contribution toward expenses, and the use of video equipment if needed. “The Annual” was designed to run itself (more or less). It provided an ongoing, artist-curated situation. There was always something to do on Friday nights. (Marioni 1976, pages unnumbered)

Inside is a second camera on a tripod, a Ouija board and thin sheet of 8½x11” glass hung from the ceiling at “eye level”. Once inside I interact with this space, first with the four corners moving in a counterclockwise direction, feeling my way past each of the four “arch walls” as I pass, then repeat this action in reverse, (clockwise). I move then to the floor center locating the camera.

3) The first camera is terminated by severing camera-to-deck connection, switching to video #2. During this activity I remove my clothes.

4) Standing, looking at the camera, I remove the hood. I look directly into camera lens, picturing mentally the monitor in studio 10, travelling thru the electrical connection I project myself into studio 10, picturing the people there, projecting myself into their presence.

5) Sitting on the floor, placing my hands on Ouija board, I ask “is there a spirit present”. If the answer is “no” or “yes” I respond accordingly. If I receive no contact I end the piece by breaking the sheet of glass against my forehead. If contact is established, upon satisfaction that this activity is completed, the act of breaking the glass nevertheless transpires.

6) Performance ends after I have broken the glass and proclaim: “WE ARE IN THE TOWER THE TOWER IS IN US” (Irwin 1978)
</text>

                <text>A single invitation was sent out telling the receiver to arrive at the Art Institute at a given time and the guard on duty that night would direct the person to the bottom of the stairwell of the tower. The tower is seven stories high and has steep ascending steps. The tower was unlit.

On the top landing of the tower a man was seated blindfolded, with half of his face and shoulders stamped repeatedly with his name. A tape player sang out with the sound of bells. From outside the tower, a rope hung three quarters of the way down. One lamp lit the landing.

The guest had to find his way up to the top landing which was lit and he found a camera at his end of the landing and was confronted with the scene of a blindfolded man with his head between his legs and his arms wrapped around his legs. My intention was to work through childhood fears and present-day fears of incarceration by symbolically acting out personal feelings.

The tower presents confinement. The bells ring, dreams thoughts of liberty; the rope, that far-off dream of escape. The fact that it hung only three quarters of the way down made it even less likely that escape would occur. Yet the possibility is never abandoned. (Bustos 1978: 18)
