<text><p>The Floating Museum has no walls. It is an invisible system designed to exhibit works of art that do not fit into the traditional boundaries of museum and gallery situations. The Floating Museum facilitates and encourages artists whose work takes place directly in he environment. A fundamental concept of The Floating Museum is to recycle existing spaces and resources as well as to transform local areas into temporary exhibition sites. (Hershman 1977) The public art statement Lynn Hershman designed, The Floating Museum, was structured to be integrated into everyday life. It enabled artists to present works of art that they could not fit within he traditional boundaries of museum and gallery situations. The Floating Museum invited an artists and made the necessary arrangements for the presentation of the artist&rsquo;s piece. Most of the works related to the environment or inter-media presentations. The projects developed in three phases in the three years of The Floating Museum&rsquo;s operation (1975-1978).</p>
<p>The first year and a half, from the fall of 1975, twelve individual projects were commissioned. Over half were by Bay Area artists, and the others were by artists who came to present the work in the San Francisco area [&hellip;] The program was inaugurated on November 6 1975, with two performance pieces by Eleanor Antin, a Southern California artist, who chose to present &ldquo;King&rsquo;s Meditation&rdquo; at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco and the following day the &ldquo;Ballerina&rdquo; in the eighteenth-century French galleries at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor [&hellip;] The second phase of The Floating Museum&rsquo;s programming was called &ldquo;Global Space Invasion: Phase I&rdquo; and introduced into the Museum&rsquo;s activity collaboration and extension beyond the Bay Area. In May 1977 nine artists went to Europe to create work together or individually in various cities. The following year, in July 1978, new work by these same artists, reflecting their European experience, was shown in &ldquo;Global Space Invasion: Phase II&rdquo; at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the final event in The floating Museum&rsquo;s life. <text>Roberta Breitmore is a portrait of a woman in San Francisco: a collage of a person experiencing her environment. She is a contemporary heroine fashioned from real life and in real time. Her social identities – checkbook, licenses, handwriting and speech mannerisms are textures and testaments to her credibility.

Roberta’s construction is ambiguous. She is at once fictional and real; physical and ephemeral. As she gains experience and time dimension, the people that are incorporated into her history become fictionalized, archetypal characters. The articles of her life are both token symbols as well as functioning, necessary items.

Roberta Breitmore is a living tableau. Somewhere between the reality and imagination she breathes in the real spaces of her existence. She participates in the world, reflects the social preoccupations of her contemporaries, attends psychotherapy and weightwatchers and generally maps passages through which many people have traveled.

Roberta’s “mask” is achieved by using cosmetics as paint and her skin as a canvas. Her conversations reveal that everyone she meets is also wearing an “invisible” mask. (Hershman in Loeffler and Tong 1980: 305)

<text>The piece took place in Eleanor Coppola’s home. Two museums wanted us to do something in her house and we just decided that instead of giving the a tour we would turn the entire house into a game board. So we used the floor plan as a kind of Monopoly, drove people into the rooms in order to find something though at the end there was no real prize. We were in one room and we projected the game’s instructions to the groups who were in the living room. We engaged a union of prostitutes to be in the rooms doing various things, like interacting with the patrons, so you did not know who was real and who was not, who was a prostitute and who was not. This created a blur over the whole population who came that evening. (Hershman Leeson in Giannachi and Kaye 2011: 38)

I just set up a hotel room you could go 24 hours a day, any day of the week. You could sign in at the desk, get a key, go up to the room, and trespass into this kind of alien identity that was there. There were two wax figures that were lying in the bed as you entered the room, two women. Articles of their lives were part of the environment, so you got a sense of the people who inhabited the space. I used what was there, changing it as little as I could. A special record was made for sound, and I used different kinds of lighting.</p>
