Title A name given to the resource Saloon of MOCA Description An account of the resource For a couple of years in 1973 and 1974 every Wednesday afternoon there was free beer in MOCA while artists’ video tapes were shown. In ’76 I decided to meet people downstairs in Breen’s Café, and I sent out cards announcing Café Society “twotofour” every Wednesday in the Saloon of MOCA. I got the name from Bob Feldman, a New York publisher. I had just done a one page photo-work for San Francisco Magazine that said, “There is meaning in life only only if you devote yourself to society,” and when Feldman saw it he said, “café society.” I went down to Breen’s every Wednesday, sat there, and drank a beer. In the afternoon Breen’s wasn’t busy, and we took over the booths in the front of the bar. Later, the booths were reserved for us. Over the years, the meeting time had gotten later. Now, it’s in my studio and is from five to eight. My Café Society became a kind of open house for artists, an artists’ bar, really. In New York, a lot of artists were living in the same neighborhood, SoHo, which had bars where they hung out. But the only way to get an artists’ scene going in San Francisco was to do it in an artificial way, by formalizing it, by inviting people. In his honor, a fund-raising $1,000-a-plate-dinner was held at the Museum of Conceptual Art. Using a third hand and a pair of cotton lips, saving his own limbs for later, Darling greeted his supporters and stated his platform. Tom Marioni Description An account of the resource Breen’s Bar, Salon of MOCA, the site of Marioni’s Café Society, where on Wednesdays from 2-4 p.m. artists would meet and exchange ideas and energy. Beer was free. Marioni’s “concept of Café Society is drunken parties where ideas are born.” (Loeffler and Tong 1980: 366) Tom Marioni loosely organized a group of people who met in a place called Breen’s Bar on Third between Mission and Market. It was an old bar used by the San Francisco Chronicle writers. It became a kind of unofficial meeting place, a place where people, mainly artists, would go and gather and talk. Maybe just fool around. But a place where we could meet. There actually were a number of shows done in that bar; we did a sculpture-sound show organized by Tom Marioni that ended up on KPFA radio in Berkeley. And slowly a lot of energy began to develop around him.
