Title A name given to the resource Exhibition: South of the Slot Description An account of the resource South of the Slot was a group show that took place in San Francisco during the months of October and November in 1974. It was a show that was organized by a group of artists as a much needed forum for a particular kind of work. Organised around a loose structure, the artists that participated were asked to choose a date and time at which they would present their work. The space at 63 Bluxome Street in San Francisco was made available to them through the two month period with no stated restrictions as to how the space was to be used. The work that was presented differed widely with each individual, but in general relied on real time presentation for transferring information from artist to audience. The directness of this kind of transference sets up a field of variables very different from traditional forms of art. Each artist dealt with these variables by finding a mode which best suited the ideas inherent in the design of the presented situation. The twenty two presentations included such various modes as: video performance and live performance, projections and photo-documentation, dance and music, tableau and environmental situation. In the dark room I placed two candles bent into semi-circles on the floor to form a circle. Each candle was lit at one end so as to form double flames always burning opposite each other. This was used as the timing element to establish the duration of the performance, which was approximately one hour. As the people entered the performance I gave each one  a piece of freshly baked bread from a loaf about 1 ½ metres long made especially for this performance.  Next to the candles I placed a large cauldron-shaped aluminium bowl and iron parabolic plow disc. I continuously bowed the edges of both bowls simultaneously with two heavily rosined [sic] violin bows producing deeply resonant, reverberating sounds. As the sound waves from the plow disc, which were emanating horizontally, interfered with the sound waves from the large aluminum bowl, which were emanating vertically, a heavy beating sound was produced and gave a strong rhythmic character to the performance. Richard Alpert Description An account of the resource The performance space was divided into a light half and a dark half. I began the performance by standing in the dark half, and kicking a ball into the light half of the space against the back wall. With each successive kick of the ball, I shortened the distance between myself and the back of the space, until the ball was against the wall and I could no longer kick it. I then moved back towards the dark half of the space in the same manner. The close I was to the wall, the more direct the path of the rebounding ball, and the more intense was the sound in the space. Tom Marioni Description An account of the resource I made my first drum brush drawings in 1972 and I continue to make these drawings, which are inspired by the automatic writing of the surrealist movement. The drawings are the result of rubbing and beating with steel wire drum brushes ( like jazz drummers use) against a large sheet of sandpaper. The steel is transferred to the paper over a long period of time and the brushing on the sandpaper makes a rasping sound. The action is repetitive like that of a knife against a sharpening stone. The left hand makes a single arc, up and down, while the right hand moves in a circle-like motion in the shape of a violin or an artist’s palette. Over the years the drawings have changed only slightly, like handwriting changes as personality evolves. This becomes a kind of talk drumming, played on a hollow core drawing board. The result is a pictorial record of the sound activity, a marriage of art and music. During a drawing/drumming session, because of the repetition of sound and action a trance state can occur and I can see elements of fantasy in the marks. (Montano 1981, pages unnumbered) In Death and Birth: A Crib Event [sic], she lay for three hours in a baby’s crib, dressed in a nightgown and covered with baby blankets, while a tape loop of her mother talking about her conception and birth played over and over.
